What is roofing SEO, and which part do we run?

Roofing SEO is search engine optimization for roofing companies: the work that helps your business come up when someone searches for a roofer. The part we run is local SEO: your Google Business Profile, a local visibility program, your Google reviews, posts on six platforms, AI search and reports.

Here is why we start there. On its help page Tips to improve your local ranking on Google, Google says that when a customer searches for a business near them, “they’ll find local results on Google Maps and Search,” and that “You can use your Business Profile to improve your business’s local ranking.”

The same profile reaches past the map. In its guide to optimizing for generative AI features, Google says Google Business Profiles “can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results.”

So our work happens on your Google Business Profile, your Google reviews, your social channels and AI search. We never need your Google password.

How Google ranks local results on Google Maps

On its help page Tips to improve your local ranking on Google, Google says “Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity.” The same help page explains three factors under the headings Relevance, Distance and Prominence. Here is what each one means and what we do about it.

Google’s Relevance, Distance and Prominence factors, and what we do for each
Google’s factorWhat Google saysWhat we do
RelevanceHow well your Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. Google says to provide complete and detailed business info so it can match you to relevant searches.Your categories, services, description and attributes, audited and then kept optimized.
DistanceHow far your business is from the customer who is searching.Nobody can change how far you are from the person searching. Your monthly report shows where you rank across your area.
ProminenceHow well-known your business is. Google says this is also based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Our part is reviews: a review request after every completed job, and replies to your new reviews.

Google’s own tips on the same page: verify your business, keep your information complete and accurate, reply to reviews, and add photos and videos. Google says “Businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results.”

Google’s rules for service-area and hybrid businesses

If you go to the customer’s roof and customers don’t come to your office or yard, Google calls you a service-area business: one that visits customers directly but doesn’t serve customers at its business address. Google says to remove your address from your Business Profile and enter only your service area.

These are Google’s own rules, quoted so you can check your profile against them.

  • Up to 20 service areas. Google says you can set up to 20, based on the cities, postal codes or other areas you serve.
  • No radius. Google says you can’t set your service area as a radius around your business.
  • About 2 hours of driving. Google says your overall service area shouldn’t extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based, and that for some businesses, larger service areas may be appropriate.
  • One profile per business. Google says there should only be one profile per business. If you have different locations with separate service areas and separate staff at each one, Google allows one profile for each location.
  • No virtual office. Google says service-area businesses can’t list a virtual office unless that office is staffed during business hours.
  • Customers visit you too? Google calls that a hybrid business: you can show your address and set a service area, as long as the location is staffed by your team and able to receive customers during its stated hours. Without permanent on-site signage, Google says it should be listed as a service-area business.

Google reviews for roofers: what Google allows

Google allows you to ask customers for reviews of a genuine experience, as long as you don’t offer incentives or try to influence the rating or what the review says. These are the lines Google draws.

  • Discounts or payment for reviews. Google does not allow incentives such as payment, discounts or free services in exchange for a review, or for changing or removing a negative one.
  • Asking only for positive reviews. Google does not allow businesses to discourage negative reviews or to selectively ask for positive ones.
  • Telling customers what to write. Google says businesses should not pressure customers to leave reviews on the premises, or request that specific content be included.

Google’s own advice, from its help page Tips to get more reviews: ask customers to visit a Google link or scan a QR code to leave a review. When you reply, Google suggests that instead of sending the same “thank you” to everyone, you focus on reviews where you can share a helpful update or answer a question.

What we do: every completed job triggers a text and an email asking for a Google review, with a direct link, and we reply to your new Google reviews. The request goes out after every completed job, not only the ones you pick. Read more on how to get more Google reviews.

Roofing SEO for AI search: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and more

No one can force an AI tool to recommend a business, no matter who says they can. We work to get you showing up in AI search results, and we track how you show up in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Perplexity. We never promise a placement in an AI answer.

For Google’s own AI features, in its guide AI features and your website, Google says “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode,” and its list of best practices includes checking that your Business Profile information is up to date.

Want to check yourself? Ask those tools the questions your customers ask, such as “Who should I call for a roof repair in my town?”, and note whether your business comes up. Our guide on how contractors show up in ChatGPT walks through it.

We asked ChatGPT for the best marketing agency in San Diego. It named us first.
