Contractor SEO for remodelers and construction companies

Contractor SEO, the way we run it, is the work that helps a contracting business come up when someone searches Google, Google Maps or an AI tool for a contractor. Ours is local SEO: we optimize and run your Google Business Profile, run a local visibility program, send a review request after every job, post to six platforms, and work on and track how you show up in AI search. You get a Day 1 snapshot, a progress report every two weeks and a monthly ranking heatmap.

  • Google says to use as few categories as possible to describe your overall core business.
  • If customers don’t come to your office or yard, Google says to remove your address from your profile and enter only your service area.
  • Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.

What is contractor SEO, and which part do we run?

Contractor SEO is search engine optimization for contracting businesses: the work that helps your company come up when someone searches for a contractor. The part we run is local SEO: your Google Business Profile, a local visibility program, your Google reviews, posts on six platforms, AI search and reports.

Why start with the profile? On its help page Tips to improve your local ranking on Google, Google says that when a customer searches for a business near them, “they’ll find local results on Google Maps and Search.” The same page says “You can use your Business Profile to improve your business’s local ranking.”

In its guide to optimizing for generative AI features, Google says Google Business Profiles “can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results.”

Searching for construction SEO or SEO for construction companies? The way we run it, it is the same local work. The system is the same for every trade. The way it runs changes for yours.

SEO for construction companies: one profile, the right categories

Google says there should only be one profile per business, and to use as few categories as possible to describe your overall core business. These are Google’s own rules on how many profiles you can have, your profile’s name and its categories, quoted so you can check your profile against them.

  • One profile per business. Google says there should only be one profile per business. If you have different locations with separate service areas and separate staff at each one, Google allows one profile for each location.
  • As few categories as possible. Google says to use as few categories as possible from its list to describe your overall core business, and to choose ones that are as specific as possible but representative of your main business.
  • “This business IS a.” Google says to select categories that complete the statement “This business IS a” rather than “this business HAS a,” and that the goal is to describe your business as a whole rather than list all the services it offers.
  • Categories are not keywords. Google says not to use categories solely as keywords or to describe attributes of your business.
  • Your real-world name. Google says your profile name should reflect your business’s real-world name, as known to customers. It says including unnecessary information in your business name isn’t permitted and could result in the suspension of your Business Profile.

What we do: your categories, services, description and attributes are part of our Google Business Profile audit, and then we keep them optimized.

How Google ranks local results on Google Maps

Google’s help page Tips to improve your local ranking on Google says “Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity.” It explains three factors under the headings Relevance, Distance and Prominence. Here is each one, and what we do about it.

Google’s Relevance, Distance and Prominence factors, and what we do for each
Google’s factorWhat Google saysWhat we do
RelevanceHow well your Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. Google says to provide complete and detailed business info so it can match you to relevant searches.Your categories, services, description and attributes, audited and then kept optimized.
DistanceHow far your business is from the customer who is searching.Nobody can change how far you are from the person searching. Your monthly report shows where you rank across your area.
ProminenceHow well-known your business is. Google says this is also based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Our part is reviews: a review request after every completed job, and replies to your new reviews.

The same page gives tips under the headings “Verify your business,” “Keep your business information up-to-date,” “Respond to reviews,” “Add photos & videos” and “Add in-store products.” Google says “Businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results.”

Google’s rules for service-area and hybrid businesses

If you go to the customer’s property and customers don’t come to your office or yard, Google calls you a service-area business: one that visits customers directly but doesn’t serve customers at its business address. Google says to remove your address from your Business Profile and enter only your service area.

Google’s guidelines give the example of a business run from a residential address: clear the address from your Business Profile.

These are Google’s own rules, quoted so you can check your profile against them.

  • Up to 20 service areas. Google says you can set up to 20, based on the cities, postal codes or other areas you serve.
  • No radius. Google says you can’t set your service area as a radius around your business.
  • About 2 hours of driving. Google says your overall service area shouldn’t extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based, and that for some businesses, larger service areas may be appropriate.
  • One profile for the whole area. Google says service-area businesses can only have one profile for the whole area that they serve.
  • No virtual office. Google says service-area businesses can’t list a virtual office unless that office is staffed during business hours.
  • Customers visit your office too? Google calls that a hybrid business: you can show your address and set a service area, as long as the location is staffed by your team and able to receive customers during its stated hours. Without permanent on-site signage, Google says it should be listed as a service-area business.

Google reviews for contractors: what Google allows

Google lets you ask customers to review a genuine experience, as long as you don’t offer an incentive or try to influence the rating or what the review says. Here is where Google draws the line.

  • Discounts or payment for reviews. Google does not allow incentives such as payment, discounts or free services in exchange for a review, or for changing or removing a negative one.
  • Asking only for positive reviews. Google does not allow businesses to discourage negative reviews or to selectively ask for positive ones.
  • Pressure on the premises, or telling customers what to write. Google says businesses should not pressure customers to leave reviews on the premises, or request that specific content be included.

In its help page Tips to get more reviews, Google suggests asking customers to visit a Google link or scan a QR code to leave a review. For replies, Google suggests that instead of sending the same “thank you” to everyone, you focus on reviews where you can share a helpful update or answer a question.

What we do: every completed job triggers a text and an email asking for a Google review, with a direct link, and we reply to your new Google reviews. The request goes out after every completed job, not only the ones you pick. More in our guide on how to get more Google reviews.

Contractor SEO for AI search: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and more

No one can force an AI tool to recommend a business, no matter who says they can. We work to get you showing up in AI search results, and we track how you show up in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Perplexity. We never promise a placement in an AI answer.

For Google’s own AI features, its guide AI features and your website says “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode,” and its list of best practices includes checking that your Business Profile information is up to date.

Want to check for yourself? Ask those tools the questions your customers ask, such as who to call for a kitchen remodel in your town, and note whether your business comes up. Our guide on how contractors show up in ChatGPT walks through it.

We asked ChatGPT for the best marketing agency in San Diego. It named us first.
