How Google decides

How Google picks which San Diego contractors show up

Google's own help page says local results “are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity,” and explains the third one under the heading Prominence. Profile management works on the two that can be worked on, relevance and prominence, every month.

Google's three local ranking factors and what profile management can do about each
FactorWhat Google saysWhat management can do
RelevanceRelevance is how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. Google asks for complete and detailed business info.We optimize your categories, services, description and attributes, and keep posts and updates current.
DistanceDistance refers to how far each business is from the customer who’s searching.Nothing. Nobody can move your shop closer to the person searching.
ProminenceMore reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking. Google also looks at how many websites link to your business.A review campaign to past customers, a review request after every job and replies to your new Google reviews. Website and link work is not part of this service.

Google's tips for a better local ranking also include keeping your information up to date, responding to reviews and adding photos and videos. Those three are the core of the monthly work above.

Before anyone touches your profile

Google's rules for San Diego service-area contractors

If you drive to your customers instead of having them come to you, Google calls you a service-area business, and the rules are different from a storefront. Google says its guidelines help you avoid common problems, including changes to your information or, in some cases, removal of your business information from Google.

  • No customers at your address? Hide it. If you don't serve customers at your business address, Google says to remove it from your profile. Google's own example is a plumber who runs the business from a residential address.
  • List real service areas, not a radius. Service areas are set by city, ZIP code or other area, up to 20 of them. Google says your overall area shouldn't be more than about 2 hours of driving time from where you're based.
  • One profile for the whole area. A service-area business gets one profile for everywhere it serves.
  • No virtual offices. A rented mailing address you don't work from isn't eligible. A co-working office only counts with clear signage, staff on site and customers received during business hours.
  • Your real name, no keywords. Your business name should match what's on your signage, website and stationery. Don't add a city or trade to it if that isn't your real name. Google says unnecessary information in a name could get the profile suspended.
  • Fewest categories that fit. Google says to choose the fewest categories it takes to describe your core business.

For example, a San Diego HVAC company run from a home that drives to jobs in nearby cities would list the cities or ZIP codes it really serves and keep the home address off the profile.

Hiring checklist

How to choose a Google Business Profile manager in San Diego

Google publishes its own advice for hiring someone to manage your profile. Here is what it says to check, and how we answer each point.

  1. Ask who they have worked with

Google suggests asking whether they've managed Business Profiles before and worked with businesses like yours.

Our answer: we work with home service and contracting businesses: plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing, remodeling, landscaping and more.

  2. Expect to see your numbers

Google lists a lack of transparency as a warning sign: you have the right to know how people view, click and interact with your profile.

Our answer: a Day 1 snapshot, a progress report every two weeks and a monthly report with a ranking heatmap.

  3. Keep control of your profile

Google says only profile owners control who has access, and they can change permissions at any time.

Our answer: we never need your website login or your Google password. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and everything posted to it stay yours.

  4. Use one manager at a time

Your business can only appear once on Google, so Google says it is hard to test more than one third party at the same time.
