How well your profile matches what someone searched for. Google’s advice is to provide complete and detailed business info.
To show up in ChatGPT and other AI search tools, start with what you control: let their search crawlers reach your website, keep your Google Business Profile complete and current, earn reviews that describe the work you do, and keep your business details the same everywhere. Then ask those tools what your customers ask and see what comes back. No one can force an AI tool to recommend a business, no matter who says they can.

People now ask AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Perplexity which local business to call. OpenAI and Perplexity each use a search crawler to surface websites in their search results, and Google’s AI features only link to pages that are indexed and eligible to show in Google Search. Here is what the companies behind them say, in their own documentation.
| AI tool | What its maker says | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements. | Get your site indexed, verify it in Google Search Console and keep your Business Profile information up to date. |
| ChatGPT search | OpenAI’s crawler OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT’s search features. Sites that opt out of it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. | Allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt file and allow its published IP addresses in your firewall or security settings. GPTBot is a separate crawler, used to crawl content that may be used for model training. |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity’s search results. Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. | Allow PerplexityBot in your robots.txt file and in your firewall. |
| Gemini, Claude and Grok | Not covered here. This guide only describes mechanics from documentation we have read and link below. | Ask them your customers’ questions and write down what they say. That is the only honest check. |
For showing up in search answers, what these pages describe is access (can the crawler reach your site?) and quality. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and its version of quality is the same advice it gives for all of Search: helpful, reliable, people-first content. OpenAI’s page also lists a separate crawler for ads: OAI-AdsBot checks pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT.
Google also says AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics and data sources to build one answer. Our read, as an opinion: a website that answers specific questions (which services, which towns, what to expect) gives those extra searches more to find than a homepage that only says “quality work.”

In its guide to AI features, Google lists keeping your Business Profile information up to date as one of the basics worth doing. Your Business Profile is also the listing customers see in Google Maps and local search. So for a contractor, the same profile work counts on both fronts.
Google says its local results “are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity,” and explains the third one under the heading Prominence. Its tips also point to verifying your profile and keeping it complete:
How well your profile matches what someone searched for. Google’s advice is to provide complete and detailed business info.
How far your business is from the person searching. If they don’t share a location, Google uses what it knows about where they are.
How well known your business is. Google says this draws on things like how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.
Google says verified businesses are more likely to show up in search results, and businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results.

No one can force an AI tool to recommend a business, no matter who says they can. If anyone offers you a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT, ask them how.
Even Google says that a page meeting every requirement, best practice and policy is not guaranteed to be crawled, indexed or shown.
AI answers also differ. Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so they can show different answers and links, and that AI Overviews often don’t appear at all. So treat any single AI answer, including the one we show below, as one answer from one tool on one day.
What you control is your side of it: whether the crawlers can reach you, and whether the information about your business is complete, consistent and current.
This is the order we would work in for a plumber, roofer, HVAC company, electrician, landscaper or any other home service business. None of it needs an ad budget.
Ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, such as “Who should I call for a roof repair in my town?” or “Which plumber near me fixes water heaters?” Write down the date, the tool, the exact question and whether your business came up. That list is your starting point.
Open yourwebsite.com/robots.txt and make sure it does not block Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. Security settings can block them too: OpenAI and Perplexity both publish the IP ranges their crawlers use, and Google says crawling should be allowed by your CDN and hosting, not just robots.txt. OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to reach ChatGPT search.
Verify your site in Google Search Console and check that your service pages are indexed. Google’s AI features only link to pages that are indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, so a stray noindex or nosnippet tag on a key page keeps it out.
Verify the profile, then fill in your business category, hours, attributes and your address if customers visit you. Add real photos and videos of your work. Keep all of it current: Google asks for that in its guide to AI features, and says complete, accurate profiles are more likely to show up in local results.
Ask every customer after every job, by text and email, with a direct link to your Google review page. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and that replying shows you value the feedback. Never script what a customer writes. An honest review in their own words is the point.
Give each main service a page that says what you do, where you work and what customers usually ask before they call. Google’s list of basics for its AI features includes putting important content in text, supporting it with good images and videos, and linking your pages to each other.
Use the exact same business name, address and phone number on your website, Google, Facebook, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing and every directory you are listed in. Mismatched details make it harder for customers and search engines to tell they are all the same business.
Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema markup to appear in its AI features. If you use structured data, it should match what the page visibly says. Put your time into steps 2 to 7 first.
Ask the same questions from step 1, on the same tools, and compare with last month. In Google Search Console, Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report, under the Web search type.
A real ChatGPT search from September 2026. Omnipresent Marketing is the first business in the answer.
That is one search, for our own business, recorded on one day. It is not a promise about yours. For clients, we track how they show up in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Perplexity.
The same questions, the same tools, every month. Note whether you are named, and which competitors are named instead.
Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode in your overall search traffic, reported in the Performance report under the Web search type.
In your profile’s performance view, track calls, website clicks and direction requests. These are customers acting on your listing.
Ask every new customer, on the phone and on your forms. If someone says “ChatGPT told me,” write it down. It is a direct signal from a real customer.
GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as separate settings.Everything on this page can be done in-house. The hard part is not knowing what to do. It is doing all of it, every week, while running jobs.

No. No one can force an AI tool to recommend a business, no matter who says they can. What you can do is make sure ChatGPT’s search crawler can reach your website, and keep your Google Business Profile, reviews and listings complete and current.
OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot crawler is used to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features. Sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt file.
That is your call. OpenAI says GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train its AI models, while OAI-SearchBot is for search. The two settings are independent, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search results.
No. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no new AI text files or special schema.org structured data to add. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet.
Ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, such as “Who should I call for a roof repair in my town?” or “Which HVAC company near me repairs air conditioners?”, and note whether your business comes up. No one can promise a date. OpenAI says a change to your robots.txt file can take about 24 hours to reach ChatGPT search. Whether and when an AI tool names your business in an answer is up to that tool.
