  • On its help page Tips to improve your local ranking on Google, Google says “Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity.”
  • Google’s own tips on the same page: verify your business, keep your information complete and accurate, reply to reviews, and add photos and videos. Google also says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.
  • Plumbing and HVAC under one company name? Google says there should only be one profile per business.
  • If customers don’t come to your shop, Google says to remove your address from your profile and enter your service area instead.
  • No one can force an AI tool to recommend a business, no matter who says they can. We work to get you showing up in AI search results, and we track how you show up.
  • Your part: about 5 to 10 minutes to set up.

What Google ranks local results on, and what we do

On its help page Tips to improve your local ranking on Google, Google says: “Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity.” The same help page has sections headed Relevance, Distance and Prominence, summarized below. Our work is on the parts of your profile Google points to: complete business info, reviews and replies, and photos and videos.

Google’s Relevance, Distance and Prominence sections, and what we do for each
Google’s headingWhat Google saysWhat we do
RelevanceHow well your Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. Google says complete and detailed business info helps it match you to relevant searches.Your categories, services, description and attributes, audited and then kept optimized.
DistanceHow far your business is from the customer who is searching.Nobody can change how far you are from the person searching. Your monthly report shows where you rank across your area.
ProminenceHow well-known your business is. Google says this is also based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Our part is reviews: a review request after every completed job, and replies to your new reviews.

Plumbing and HVAC SEO under one name

If you run plumbing and HVAC as one company, Google’s Guidelines for representing your business on Google say there should only be one profile per business.

Google says to use as few categories as possible to describe your overall core business, as specific as possible but representative of your main business. It says to pick categories that complete the statement “This business IS a” rather than “this business HAS a,” and that the goal is to describe your business as a whole, not to list every service you offer.

One exception: if you have different locations with separate service areas and separate staff at each one, Google allows one profile for each location.

In our audit we set your categories, services, description and attributes, then keep them optimized as your profile stays active.

Google’s own rules for your Business Profile

These are Google’s own rules, quoted so you can check your profile against them.

  • A tagline in your business name. Google says your name should reflect your business’s real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers. Marketing taglines are on its list of what a name must not include, and Google says unnecessary information in a business name could result in the suspension of your Business Profile.
  • Showing an address customers never visit. Google says a service-area business should hide its business address from customers. Its own example: a plumber who runs the business from a residential address should clear the address from the profile. Then enter the service areas you cover.
  • A service area set as a radius. Google says you can’t set your service area as a radius around your business. You can set up to 20 service areas by city, postal code or other area. Google says your overall service area shouldn’t extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based, and that for some businesses, larger service areas may be appropriate.
  • Hours that don’t match when customers can reach you. Google asks for your regular customer-facing hours. If your hours change by season, Google says you may use your current seasonal hours as your regular hours, and you can set More hours to highlight times for specific services.
  • A virtual office as your address. Google says service-area businesses can’t list a virtual office unless it is staffed during business hours.
  • Prices, sales or links in your description. Google says the business description shouldn’t focus on special promotions, prices or offer sales, and no links of any type are allowed in it.
  • Paying or discounting for reviews. Google does not allow incentives such as payment, discounts or free services in exchange for a review.
  • Asking only for positive reviews. Google does not allow businesses to discourage negative reviews or ask only for positive ones. Our review requests go out after every completed job.
